The end is near

…for the home “˜landline’ phone that is.

Recently, a senior executive for AT&T testified in front of the House Energy and Commerce Committee asking them to clear a path for AT&T to fully transition to a 4G network in order to discontinue support for the traditional landline. AT&T has spent $98 billion between 2008-2012 in transitioning to wireless networks.

Is your business like an old landline?

Technology changes have two impacts on businesses:

  1. Technology changes cripple those businesses that do not adapt
  2. Technology changes strengthens those businesses who embrace and utilize technology

Can you believe that there is an actual term for this? Business text books refer to this condition as ‘digital Darwinism’. Those companies who evolve with technology survive and those that do not perish. Natural selection in action.

The question that every printing business large or small must ask: Is my business utilizing new technologies to grow and thrive?

Two types of technology

There are two main types of technology that printing businesses should be concerned with: Hardware (equipment) and software.

Consider the value and economic impact that automatic screen print presses and direct-to-screen technology have on a shop. This equipment and technology boosts productivity through time savings and an increase in throughput which is ultimately reflected in the bottom line.

So often, businesses focus on hardware / equipment technology since it is more apparent. A failure to leverage business software could have big consequences.

Takeaway

Printing businesses of all sizes must embrace new technologies emerging within their industry. This is especially important when the technology has the potential to disrupt the current business model and practice.
